생명의 땅, 아마존 (Amazon with Bruce Parry) [6부작]

 

다큐소개 : BBC에서 2008년도에 만든 작품으로 Bruce Parry가 나레이터를 맡았으며, 2009년도에 KBS1 TV를 통해 방영되었던 환경 다큐멘터리입니다. 총 6개의 에피소드로 이루어져 있으며 Bruce Parry가 직접 돌아다니면서  무분별한 파괴현장을 보여줍니다.

 

아마존강 : 유역면적 705만㎢로 세계에서 가장 큰 강이다. 길이는 6516㎞로 나일강에 이어 세계에서 두 번째로 길다. 페루 안데스산맥에서 발원하여 처음에는 북류(北流)하다가 나중에 동류하여 브라질 북부를 관류한 다음 적도상(赤道上)의 대서양으로 흘러든다. 유역은 북위 5°(히우브랑쿠江의 水源)에서 남위 20°(볼리비아 남부) 사이, 경도는 서경 50° 78° 사이에 해당한다. 아마존은 우선 2개의 큰 강, 즉 마라뇬강과 우카얄리강이 합류하여 형성된다. 마라뇬강은 아마존의 본류로 간주되는데 그 원류는 페루의 중서부, 태평양에서 약 200㎞ 떨어진 페루의 안데스산에서 발원하여 700m의 깊이를 가진 협곡을 만들면서 약 1000㎞를 북류한다. 그 후 에콰도르 국경 부근에서 동쪽으로 방향을 바꾸고 나우타(페루)에서 우카얄리강과 합류한다. 우카얄리강의 원류는 아푸리막강이라고도 하는데, 페루 남부의 안데스에서 발원하여 마라뇬강과 나란히 흐르며, 합류한 후에는 페루의 이키토스 부근에서 동쪽으로 방향을 바꾼다. 이 두 하천의 합류지점으로부터 그 하류를 아마존강이라 부른다. 본류 마라뇬강의 원류부터 아마존 하구까지는 6400㎞, 우카얄리강의 원류부터 하구까지는 7025㎞이며, 아마존 하구의 너비는 약 335㎞로 추정된다. 하구 근처에는 크고 긴 삼각주가 자리잡고 있으며, 천수백 개의 섬과 사주가 산재해 있다. 그 중에서도 마라조섬을 사이에 두고 크게 두 갈래로 갈려서 대서양으로 흘러든다. 브라질 영내의 강폭은 2∼10㎞이며 거대한 유량이 유입하기 때문에 하구에서 약 400km 떨어진 앞바다까지 해수의 염분이 희석되고, 수십km에 이르는 바다가 토사로 흐려져 있다. 1∼6월의 우기에는 중류의 마나우스처럼 수위 차가 20m나 되는 곳도 있다. 봄에는 조수의 간만 때문에 하구 부근에 해소(海嘯:밀물 때 얕은 해안이나 세모꼴로 떨어진 河口에서 일어나는 거센 파도나 그 소리)가 일어나 파고(波高) 5m 내외의 파도가 밀어닥치기도 한다.한편, 2008년 페루의 리마지리학회는 아마존강의 전체 길이가 7062㎞로 6671㎞인 나일강보다 391㎞ 더 긴 것으로 조사되었다고 발표하였다. 이에 따라 아마존강을 세계에서 가장 긴 강이라고도 하지만, 아직까지 국제적으로 공인된 것은 아니다.

[Episode One] Bruce Parry begins an epic adventure in the Amazon, following the river from source to sea. The first part of his journey takes him from the source in the High Andes through Peru's dangerous cocaine producing valleys to visit the Ashaninka tribe.   [Episode Two] Bruce Parry continues his Amazon adventure, travelling through the jungles of Peru to visit the Achuar people, a remote tribe who are fighting to keep oil companies off their land. He undergoes a profound shamanic ritual in an effort to find his vision.   [Episode Three] Bruce Parry travels to a remote part of the Brazilian Amazon to explore what happens when the outside world makes contact with isolated tribes. He visits old friends the Matis tribe and works with a logging crew cutting timber deep in the forest.   [Episode Four] Bruce Parry reaches the halfway point of his epic journey in the vast nature reserve of Mamiraua, home to the Amazon's most iconic species. He lives with the Ribeirinho, the river people, and hunts for the Amazon's biggest fish, the Pirarucu.   [Episode Five] Bruce Parry explores the wealth of the Amazon rainforest. He parties with the millionaires of Manaus, the Amazon's biggest city, he lives and works with illegal gold miners seeking their fortune and he sleeps in the forest canopy with the Scientists trying to value the forest in a revolutionary new way.   [Episode Six] Bruce Parry reaches the end of his Amazon adventure in Brazil's Para state where huge areas of forest are being cut down for cattle farming. Here the battle for the Amazon is at its most fierce and Bruce sees both sides living with the cowboys and the Kayapo indians.
